What is Gum Disease?

As many as four in every five people are impacted by gum disease throughout their lives. Harmful bacteria create byproducts called ‘plaque.’ When plaque gets into places that a toothbrush can’t reach, such as under the gum line, it can cause periodontal disease! If your teeth feel loose or gums bleed when you brush, you might have gum disease.

Gum disease is no joke, and when Dr. Scheddin discovers it, he’ll get to work immediately. Gum disease therapy from Smile Studio of Spring Lake involves scaling and root planing. During this process, Dr. Scheddin scrapes away buildups of tartar and plaque that have infiltrated your gum line. Modern treatment of gum disease does not typically include surgery thanks to laser treatment which can even regenerate new gum tissue and bone attachment for diseased teeth.

Scaling & Root Planing

You’ll need something more than a typical dental cleaning when your mouth is already being affected by advanced gum disease. We can use a technique called scaling to clear out the pockets between your teeth and gums, removing the trapped plaque and tartar that’s contributing to your gum disease. After that, root planing is employed to make the surface of the tooth roots nice and smooth so that harmful substances don’t get caught on them as easily in the future, and so that detached gum tissue can healthily reattach.

Antibiotic Therapy

After the initial scaling and root planing, we may prescribe antibiotic therapy. Antibiotics can fight bacteria hiding in areas of the mouth that were overlooked by the deep cleaning procedure. We can remove much of the bacteria around and below your gum line, but the infection could still be present to some degree. Statistics show that employing antibiotics after scaling and root planing can significantly help the reduction of periodontal pockets.
